La Société Française de Biologie du Développement, membre fondateur de la Fédération Réaumur des Sciences de la Vie, fédère les chercheurs qui travaillent de près ou de loin dans le domaine de la Biologie du Développement depuis plus de 20 ans et compte à ce jour 150 membres. Elle a pour but de promouvoir les recherches dans les domaines de l’embryologie descriptive et expérimentale, de la différenciation, du développement post-embryonnaire, de la croissance, de la régénération, de la tératologie et de la génétique chez tous les organismes vivants, quelles que soient les techniques utilisées et de faciliter l’échange des idées et des moyens au sein de la communauté scientifique.
La SFBD est aussi membre de l’International Society of Developmental Biologists (ISDB).
Chaque année, la SFBD organise en France un colloque annuel. Ces dernières années, ces colloques ont été organisés en partenariat avec des Sociétés de Biologie du Développement étrangères, en particulier en 2003 et 2011 avec la BSDB (Royaume-Uni), en 2006 avec la SKMB (Suisse), en 2008 et 2010 avec la JSBD (Japon) et en 2009 avec la SEBD (Espagne). Ces colloques connaissent un succès croissant du fait de leur qualité et de la richesse des échanges. Cette année, le congrès sera organisé à Montpellier en partenariat avec la SOciété Française de Biologie Cellulaire.
Une attention toute particulière est réservée aux jeunes chercheurs. Les frais d’inscription aux colloques sont relativement faibles, leur permettant ainsi de participer à moindre coût à un congrès scientifique.
De plus, depuis plusieurs années, la SFBD a mis en place un programme de bourses de voyages s’adressant aux étudiants en fin de thèse leur permettant de couvrir une partie des frais d’un congrès à l’étranger. Ces dernières années, nous avons organisé deux appels d’offre et attribué des bourses d’un montant de 500 euros. En général, deux appels d’offre sont lancés chaque année.
La SFBD essaye aussi de diffuser toutes les informations susceptibles d’intéresser les membres via l’envoi par courrier électronique d’une lettre mensuelle.
L’essentiel de nos actions est financé par les cotisations de nos membres. Ces cotisations modiques peuvent être réglées par un bon de commande sur les crédits Université, CNRS, etc… du laboratoire et s’élèvent à 25 euros pour un doctorant et à 50 euros pour les autres et permettent d’obtenir un tarif réduit pour la participation au colloque annuel mais aussi de bénéficier des bourses de la SFBD. The French Society of Developmental Biology (SFBD) brings together scientists who are developmental biologists or whose research interests overlap with this field. The Society was established over 20 years ago and is a founder member of the Réaumur Fédération which provides a legal and administrative basis for many French biological societies. The SFBD is also a member of the International Society of Developmental Biologists (ISDB).
The aim of the SFBD is to promote research in all areas of developmental biology, both pre- and post-natally, on all types of model systems. Their mandate extends to stem cell research and tissue regeneration and to developmental malformations and congenital defects. In addition to a wide range of experimental approaches, addressing these topics also involves theoretical modeling.
The Society organises an annual meeting in France, often in association with the Developmental Biology Society of another country, for example in 2010 this was with the Japanese, in 2009 with the Spanish and in 2011, with the British Society of Developmental Biology. In addition to the larger annual meeting (360 participants in 2010), which covers many topics, the Society also organises smaller meetings on a specific subject, for example a meeting at the end of 2010 on small RNAs with the French Society of Genetics (SFG). The SFBD aims to encourage young researchers by assuring a lower registration fee for students at meetings. The SFBD is also anxious to reach out to French postdocs abroad and tries to encourage them to attend the annual meeting.
The Society also runs a fellowship programme that covers travel and part of the costs of meetings abroad. This is designed for PhD students approaching the end of their thesis so that they can benefit scientifically from such meetings and also acquire contacts that may be useful for planning a future postdoc. In general there are two calls per year for candidates, who are judged by a sub-committee on the basis of their CV, research achievements and their justification for the proposed meeting which should be in a domain of interest to the Society. In general about 6 fellowships of about 500 euros each, are awarded per year.
All information of interest to members is sent to them by e-mail and posted on the website in a montly newsletter. The activities of the Society are overseen by a committee composed of a President, Secretary, Treasurer and 12 members, elected for a two year period (see link on site).
Most of the SFBD activities are financed by members’ subscriptions, as well as by any profits made by the annual meetings, which depend on outside sponsorship as well as registration fees. The annual membership fees are low - at present 25 euros for a student and 50 euros for others. These can be paid by the laboratory, using University, CNRS, INSERM or other sources, and we would urge lab heads to automatically ensure the membership of PhD students, postdocs and senior scientists. Membership confers the advantages of a reduced registration fee at SFBD meetings, the possibility of applying for a travel fellowship for meetings abroad, and access to the monthly newsletter.
